a glimpse into Past Ground Shots land capsule contents :
What is Ground Shots ?
It is a patchwork of
stream of consciousness writing, part capsule of time via art and medicine, part ongoing land study. Ground Shots is meant to be a recollection of and reflection on moments, reactions and engagements with place and the land.
sometimes it includes prints.
sometimes it includes plant lists from locations ranging from north carolina to california.
sometimes it includes drawings or scraps of little things from distinct places.
it might be cut and paste, or letterpress, or some other form of printing.
it might be hand bound or not.
it might be a guide to doing different kinds of things with the land.
or ways of thinking about the land and who has access to it.
it could sometimes be an object, or come with an object that is an extension of the ideas held within. or point to an object.
occasionally it might pair with a potion that can be used inside the body, or on the skin, made from the land.
it might gives instructions on sustainable & sensitive harvest of plants, how to make medicines, or ID plants, or get to know a certain landscape. but it may not include these things sometimes
it is more often a collection of feelings and movements coming into being indirectly.
it says things sideways.
it processes the land and the world and the movement of ideas mostly from the perspective of a person from the south (with occasional guest collaborators) finding their body on distant lands and in distant cultures.
while on Signal Fire's Wide Open Studios 2017 Summer Immersion traversing by foot the Wallowas in Oregon and Bitterroots in Montana & Idaho studying the complex dynamics of being on stolen Nez Perce land.
It began as a practice of drawing the ground during a wilderness solo, as a creative meditative exercise aimed at staying present and slow.
but it was actually something that had been happening for years already while taking in place in different ways.
lots of things can be a 'snap-shot' of the ground.
these exercises are attempts at processing the natural and social world using art and alchemy.
the project made the first mini-zine after Wide Open Studios with Signal Fire was over, & in a cabin in the woods up above the Columbia River for a month. (during the Gorge fire)
the first zine associated with the project, deemed issue '1/2' was cut and paste style, using a typewriter, botanical cyanotypes made in different spaces and vintage book pages.
it was copied, printed and bound at a Hood River UPS store on the smokiest days of the 2017 Gorge fire.
