dry/frost scrapper for hide tanners
dry/frost scrapper for hide tanners
Hide tanning scrapers made wit salvaged high carbon leaf spring steel that’s been heat treated by heating to 1550 degrees F and then quenched in oil before mounting on hand shaped handles made from local (western Colorado) Douglas Fir scrap wood salvaged from timber frame buildings.
wooden handle is 19 ½ inches long
The flatter blade is nice for frost scraping, where you allow the hide to freeze in a frame with water or solution saturated in it and scraped while frozen. It is also fine to scrape without it being frozen with this blade, or used as a softener if the blade is dull.
I highly recommend keeping up on sharpening this blade regularly while being used, for it’s most effective use. Dry scrapers should be very ‘sharp’ when scraping a bone dry or frozen hide.
